Good morning everyone! This week I’ll be talking about a show called “Yuri on Ice” by Sayo Yamamoto and Mitsuro Kubo. This anime last year and I heard so much buzz about it that I had to watch and I have to say this show was the most beautiful and hilarious anime that I have seen in a while. It was totally awesome and it blew me away to the point where I was crying that the season was over.
This anime revolves around figure skating and a guy named Yuri. Yuri had natural talent in the sport but has very low self-esteem and would occasionally self destruct every time he went out to compete. It got so bad that he decided to run and hide back in his hometown and stuff his face with food after he got last place in the national championship. Don’t know if you guys know this but figure skaters need to maintain a lean and light figure similar to a ballerina or they’ll most likely hurt themselves or fall flat on their face while performing. Anyway, while he’s at home his idol Victor Nickiforov takes notice of him and decides to put his own skating career on hold to personally coach Yuri. Victor claims that not only will he help him get back into the ISU Grand Prix but he will win 1st place, too.
Victor is a beautiful man, but a ruthless coach. I couldn’t tell you how many times I busted out laughing because Victor holds his friendly smile while ripping Yuri a new one whenever he messed up. If theirs one thing that confused me the entire time I watched this anime is that I couldn’t determine if Yuri and Victor were gay or not or that they were even a couple as the story progressed. Some of things that I learned while watching is that Victor is very affectionate; he likes hugging kissing people all the time he’s just naturally friendly like that, but most of the time he does it to Yuri so it makes you think that their together. Also, Chris is not only the most obviously gay man in this entire show but my favorite character. I loved watching this guy especially when he was out on the ice. I started laughing at his routine mostly because of his inner monologue. I have a sinking suspicion that Chris likes figure skating because of some kinky sexual thrill.
If you’ve watched it then you know what I’m talking about.
I didn’t think it was possible but I haven’t been this excited about figure skating since watching Blades of Glory which we all know is a good freaking movie. I was sad to realize I was on the last episode until discovered that a SEASON 2 IS COMING SOON! That’s right folks the creators of Yuri on Ice have announced that they are in the making of a second season and that it should be released some time this year. I’m so freaking excited about it, you know I’ll be keeping my eye out for it.
For all of you, that love a good story with funny characters, figure skating or hot guys performing on ice then I suggest that you make this your next conquest on anime shows to watch. If some of you are unable to endure long hours of what could be or could not be gay love then I’m sorry that your going to miss out. This is a really awesome show and I can’t wait until the next season comes out.
Reading your review reminds me of the beautiful scene in Death Parade of her skating. You might have given more incentive to watch this one. Great read!
