Welcome back everyone!
Today I’ll be talking about the Emoji movie that cam out recently. It was made by Sony Pictures Animation. It revolves around one particular smartphone and an emoji named Gene who can’t seem to figure out what face he permanently wants to be. He’s supposed to be a meh emoji like his parents, but for some reason he’s super emotional unlike the other emojis.
All his life he wants to prove that he can do his job and be like everyone else. As you all know though, he messes that up so bad that the director of emoji company (is what I’m going to call it),Smiley, had to put some very drastic measures into effect. So, to prove to everyone that he can fix this whole mess he goes outside of the app and ventures into the other apps on the smartphone with his new friend, Hi-five in search of a hacker called Jailbreak.
Usually, I look at Rotten Tomatoes before I decide to watch a movie or not, but ended up doing the opposite. After watching it and looking at the site, I was surprised that the critics gave it a 9% and the general audience gave it a 40%. For the critics they complained that it was advertising and the advertising wasn’t that good anyway. My question to that is what exactly is this movie advertising?
I would agree with their comments if their was an app in the movie I never saw before, but their wasn’t. The whole point of advertising is to sell or suggest a product or a service to the customer that they don’t already have.
Do phones come with emojis? Yes.
Does most of the world have Spotify, Pandora or something similar on their phones or has at least heard of it? Yes.
Have you heard or played Dance Dance Revolution or something similar? Yes.
Then what exactly is this movie advertising?
For me I guess I don’t get what the issue is when the critics were concerned. The general pubic though I can make a good guess why I got that score. I think the public is tired of the same general story plot line that we’ve watched throughout the years when it comes to animation movies.
While I was watching the movie, I could already predict what was going to happen next and sure enough it happened to the point where I got bored. When movies become predictable like that the audience loses interest and I think that’s what happened here. Think about the reasons why animation movies like Frozen and Moana did so well.
It’s because they completed changed the usual animation Disney-like plot line that we are used to seeing in the past. Plus, they were both beautifully well done. I bet at first when they saw what kind of movie this was going to be everyone was excited because it was a ‘our generation’ type movie. Though after watching it they were probably very disappointed at the final result because they thought it wasn’t how they thought it was going to be. If the creators of the Emoji movie would have put in one UNPREDICTABLE TWIST in the story, then I think the ratings would have gotten a bit higher than what they are right now.
So, I take it back I can see why they general audience gave this a 40% on the site. Moving on, my favorite characters were Gene’s parents and Jailbreak. His parents because they were meh all the time, but kept saying they were having a different emotion on the inside which I thought was funny. Also, I like Jailbreak’s personality who just wants to live life the way she wants and stop being forced to be girly because that’s what everyone wants her to be. If she was a human she would be that typical teen that was hiding a double life behind her parents back.
Overall this movie wasn’t that bad, but definitely needed some work. It was still enjoyable to watch and pass the time. Also, I like to wish you all a happy thanksgiving and I hope are all enjoying stuffing your faces as you spend time with your friends and family.
